Speaking at a joint press conference with President Trump on Monday, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu took a swing at former President Barack Obama; thanking Trump for his strikes against Syria and for reasserting “American leadership” throughout the region.
The two leaders addressed reporters in Jerusalem, with Netanyahu commending President Trump for his airstrikes against the Syrian regime following a chemical weapons attack.
“I want you to know how much we appreciate your bold decision to act against the use of chemical weapons in Syria,” the Israeli leader said. “And I want to tell you also how much we appreciate the reassertion of American leadership in the Middle East.”
“I look forward to working closely with you to confront the dangers we face together in this violent and volatile Middle East. I believe that together we can roll back Iran’s march of aggression and terror in this region, and we can thwart Iran’s unbridled ambition to become a nuclear weapon state,” Netanyahu added.
The rocky-relationship between the Israeli leader and Trump’s predecessor was widely known.
Netanyahu and Obama publicly disagreed over a variety of issues including Israeli settlement development and the Iranian nuclear deal.
After the United States failed to block a UN resolution condemning Israel over its settlements in the West Bank last year, an unnamed Israeli official slammed President Obama for failing to support on of its closest allies.
“President Obama and Secretary Kerry are behind this shameful move against Israel at the U.N.,” the official said. “The U.S. administration secretly cooked up with the Palestinians an extreme anti-Israeli resolution behind Israel’s back which would be a tailwind for terror and boycotts and effectively make the Western Wall occupied Palestinian territory.” source
